Did you know that Coach Rueb has been giving tours to the Harvard Athletics staff for many years to help new hires learn more about campus and student life as well as the history of Harvard? Recently, he gave a tour of the athletic facility for first-years as part of the GPA program to connect coaches to more of the student body.
The tour includes many fun filled facts and trivia. For example, do you know why we are called the "Crimson?" The story goes back to a young graduate student, Charles Eliot (later President of the University), who passed out Crimson scarves to identify Harvard rowers during a regatta in 1858 (note: this was before uniforms!). Not everyone got the memo right away. Fifteen years later in 1873, when the Harvard Newspaper was founded, it was originally called “The Magenta”! It all came to a head in 1875 when, by student vote, the students chose Crimson over Magenta by a wide margin. The very next issue, the newspaper became “The Crimson.” Only in 1910, by a vote of the Harvard Corporation did it become official, the year after President Elliot retired. |
